4,500 Eiffel Towers: that's Global eWaste per Year

Updated: Jan 28, 2019

A staggering 45 million tons of ewaste - 4,500 times the weight of the Paris Eiffel tower - are dumped worldwide every year.

Just 20% are documented and recycled.

3,600 Eiffel Towers of eWaste simply 'disappear'.

Main receiving countries in Asia are China, India, Thailand and Vietnam.

Read the findings of a study by the World Economic Forum presented in Davos.

DOUBLE TROUBLE In these fast growing economies eWaste imports add up to a growing internal consumption with no recycling infrastructure in place, lax environmental laws and little enforcement.

Following China, Thailand banned eWaste imports only in late 2018.

MAIN BARRIERS - locally adapted process design - collecting enough material volume that makes investing into state-of-the-art, industrial scale, clean recycling facilities commercially feasible

WHAT TO DO

1. Manufacturers and local administrations need to design and implement schemes to take back end-of-life electronic products from consumers

2. Project developers need support in design, finance and implementation of eWaste reycling facilities in fast growing Asian economies
