ADDING OIL TO THE FIRE: SE ASIA PLASTIC WASTE IMPORTS

Updated: Oct 29, 2018

THE HOUSE IS BURNING

- 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in oceans every year

- 6 million tons in Asia

ADDING OIL TO THE FIRE

- plastic waste imports into SE Asia shoot up from 300k to 1,200k tons in just 12 months

- no improvement of local waste infrastructure

4 OBVIOUS CONSEQUENCES

1. Dropping price levels in domestic recycling markets, hitting poorest, informal recyclers first

2. Jump in de facto unmonitored, uncontrolled incinerator projects by inexperienced developers ?

3. Adding to current pollution by open dump, going to klongs, lakes, rivers and ocean

4. Local administrations have no chance to cope

HELLO ASEAN GOVERNMENTS - YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED NOW !!!

SE Asia is in a severe, double trouble waste crisis !

1. Uncollected, unmanaged, untreated domestic waste causing massive pollution already

2. Add-on of 1 Million tons of plastic waste from G7 countries without any waste infrastucture extension

We need immediate national government action to

1. support local communities, being totally overwhelmed by today's local waste

2. create, provide and supervise the conditions for private sector investments

3. implement and enforce environmental regulations

4. implement items 1-3 NOW!!
